A new steakhouse from Datz is coming to Riverview

Next month, the founders of Datz, Roger and Suzanne Perry, are launching a new steakhouse concept called Donovan’s Modern American Meatery (stylized “donovan’s).

Located at 11206 Sullivan St. within the Winthrop Town Centre, the 5,700-square-foot space is set to host 150 seats with both indoor and covered outdoor seating. Although the seating is plentiful, expect the concept to be following CDC guidelines when it comes to seating, and don’t forget to sport your mask until you reach your table.

The Perrys have been itching to launch the concept for 15 years and have poured over every detail from all aspects of the menu to decor down to the name itself, which pays homage to Roger’s father, Russell “Donovan” Perry. According to a release, the concept is inspired by Roger’s childhood growing up on a modest family farm in rural Ohio.

The menu is loaded with array of steaks, chops, duck, wild game and also hosts space for vegetable-forward dishes. All of will also be cooked in the exhibition kitchen, allowing diners to watch their meal prepared on the a 14-foot, combination-double-wood-fired grill and oven. The restaurant also boasts a state-of-the-art kitchen complete with a Southern Pride Smoker and Wood Stone oven.

If you’re more of a seafood enthusiast than landlubber, diners can opt for dishes like lobster mac and cheese, crab cakes, seafood towers, as well as grilled and raw oysters.

Wanting to hit each food group (not just a massive amount of protein) the concept also offers colorful sides like seasonal vegetables, onion rings, cauliflower parmesan, grilled sweet corn and creamed spinach. Oh, the press release also boasts “potatoes cooked in every way imaginable,” which means baked, fried, mashed, au gratin, and sweet potatoes with marshmallow brûlée and candied pecans.

Let’s not forget about the booze. Local mixologist master Dean Hurst (who has also worked at Bern’s Steakhouse, Haven and Epicurean Hotel) is heading up the beverage program. Diners can pair their dishes with a cocktail, a neat glass of whiskey or a glass of wine selected from a lengthy list.

Letting the entrees do the talking, Donovan’s is shooting for a “homey, convivial ambiance that reflects the familial inspiration for the concept.” That means polished concrete, repurposed wood, upcycled furniture, antique French doors, and pastoral table settings which the Perrys describe as a “comfortable cosmopolitan” vibe.

Want to be a tomahawk hoisting server or part of the Donovan’s team? The concept is hiring for multiple positions through SnapHire.

Upon opening, hours for Donovan’s are set for 4 p.m.-9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
